India to triple nuclear power capacity in next 10 years: Govt in Lok Sabha
Ground Report | New Delhi: India nuclear power; India’s nuclear power generation capacity is expected to reach 22,480 MW in the next 10 years from the current 6,780 MW with 22 reactors, the government told Parliament on March 16, 2022.
“The current installed nuclear power capacity of 6,780 MW will increase to 22,480 MW by 2031 with the progressive completion of the projects under construction and the agreed sanction,” Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (independent charge) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Union (MoES), told the Lok Sabha.
He also called nuclear power a ‘clean and environmentally friendly baseload power source that is available 24/7.’ He added that it can provide long-term energy security to India in a sustainable way.

It has huge potential and can provide long term energy security to the country in a sustainable manner. The nuclear capacity expansion programme is one of the means to achieve the country’s transition in meeting the goal of a net-zero economy.
The present installed nuclear power capacity of 6780 MW will increase to 22480 MW by 2031 on progressive completion of projects under construction and accorded sanction.
According to the central government, one more atomic power plant with 700 MW (Unit 3 in Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP), Gujarat) was connected to the grid in January this year. When KAPP’s third unit begins commercial generation, the total atomic power generation capacity will increase to 7,480 MW.
