On its ‘Service Status’ page, which sometimes went offline, Fastly said the problem was with its CDN, or content delivery network. It is a set of servers distributed around the world that serve the content that makes up websites, with the aim of ensuring that data is sent as quickly as possible.

The importance of such technology to the functioning of the Internet also means that any problem with a CDN can send websites instantly offline. In an update posted on that page, Fastly said it is ‘currently investigating the potential impact on performance with our CDN services’. Two more updates posted only clarified that the company is ‘continuing to investigate the issue’.
