Dalit Girl Laxmi's brother fought bullies for his sister's education

In Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh, 12th class student Laxmi Mewar, coming from Dalit community, was stopped by the villagers from going to school. They say that you should not go to school because other girls are also not doing so. A fight broke out between the two sides over this matter. Both sides attacked each other with sticks. The video of this assault is also going viral. Five members of the girl’s family were injured in this incident. Police has started investigation in this matter.

A Dalit Girl Laxmi’s Struggle for education

The case is of Bavaliya Khedi village of Shajapur district. 16-year-old Lakshmi Mewar studies in class XII. Some people of the village do not want her to got to school. They stopped her from going to school.

Laxmi told Dainik Bhaskar that ‘when she was returning from school some people of the village Makhan, Kundan and Dharmendra blocked her way and said that the girls of our village do not go to school. You won’t go either. My brother heard this and said that ‘my sister will do her studies, and she will go to school’. After this an argument started between them and the matter reached to a fight.’

The police have also registered a case against the girl’s brother on the basis of the complaint filed by the other side. Kotwali police station in-charge AK Sesha said that the police have registered a case against the accused under the Atrocity Act.

Society needs to stand with girls like Laxmi’s brother did

Today we say that the society is progressing, daughters are studying, they are bringing glory to the world. But even today girls in far flung areas of the country have to struggle a lot for their studies. Girls are being stopped from going to school just because the patriarchal society does not allow them to do so.

In this story, the way Laxmi’s brother fought the bullies for his sister’s education, it is worthy of praise. It tells how the people of two different families present in the society have been brought up. One is the domineering who feels that it is wrong for girls to study, the other is the brother of Lakshmi who feels that his sister has every right to study and he can do anything to safeguard her rights.
