Transgenders will get 1% reservation in govt jobs in Karnataka

Ground Report | New Delhi: Transgenders will get 1% reservation; The Karnataka government has taken a big step towards eradicating discrimination against transgenders. The government has decided to give one percent reservation to the people of the transgender community in the government jobs of the state.

Transgenders will get 1% reservation

Under this, one percent reservation will be given to transgenders for any service or post in the state. There is a wave of happiness among transgenders due to this move of the government.

This means that there will be close to normal, SC (SC), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Castes (OBC) 1% Jobs trans individuals within the quota for which the respective communities. The decision comes as an amendment to Rule 9 of the Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977, relating to government recruitment. Reservation is applicable in any service or post in all categories of employment to be filled through the direct recruitment process.

Protection of Rights Act, 2019

The notification also states that the Karnataka government will fully comply with the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, applicable for the upliftment of transgenders. There will be no discrimination against transgenders.

Under this, one percent reservation will be given to transgenders in all categories in government jobs, but if there will be no transgender applicants in that category, the posts will be filled by candidates belonging to the respective category.

With the upliftment of the transgender community in the country, the Central Government had brought the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2019. It was passed in Lok Sabha on 5th August 2019 and Rajya Sabha on 26th November 2019. Its objective was to eliminate discrimination against transgenders in education, employment, and health services, recognition of their identity, exemption of living with parents, and welfare schemes for them.

After issuing the amended notification for the people of the transgender community, the Karnataka government has also sent a copy of it to a division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka and Justice Suraj Govindraj of the Karnataka High Court.
