From heavy rains and thunderstorms to extreme temperatures, the weather is making its presence felt in various regions of the country. In the latest weather update provided by the Meteorological Department, various weather events are affecting different regions of India. Let's take a closer look at the highlights:

Cyclonic circulation and moisture supply

A low-level cyclonic circulation persists over northern Pakistan and adjoining Punjab. This weather activity is expected to move further to the northwest of India today. Moisture supply is anticipated from the Arabian Sea to northwestern India. Strong south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal also blow northeast from India at lower levels.

Rain forecast

The Meteorological Department is forecasting light to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in most areas of the western Himalayan region today, May 26. Also, the northwestern plains of India can experience rain and lightning with strong winds.

Heavy rain areas

Today, heavy rain is expected in parts of Sub-Himalayas West Bengal and Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura. In other parts of the country, changing weather patterns are bringing continuous rain and strong winds. Several regions like Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha can experience rain, lightning, and winds at speeds of 40-50 km per hour.

Storm and wind alerts

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds reaching 30 to 40 km per hour are expected in isolated parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Bihar, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Gusty winds are also likely in isolated parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala and Mahe, Assam and Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, inland southern Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Temperature outlook

According to the Department of Meteorology, there will not be any significant change in the maximum temperature in most of the country during the next five days. However, due to humid air and high temperatures, hot and uncomfortable weather conditions are expected in western Odisha and Chhattisgarh on May 26.

Southwest Monsoon Progress

The southwest monsoon is expected to move into additional parts of the southern Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the next two days.

Marine notice

Fishermen are urged to exercise caution as hurricane-force wind speeds are likely to reach 45 to 55 km per hour, with gusts up to 65 km per hour, over the northeast and northwest Arabian Sea along the coast from Gujarat. Similar weather activity is forecast for the Gulf of Mannar, the southwestern Bay of Bengal, the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas to fish or engage in any trade-related activity.

Highlights of extreme temperatures

Yesterday, Banda in East Uttar Pradesh recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Seoni in eastern Madhya Pradesh experienced a low temperature of 17.3 degrees Celsius. Hailstorms occurred in isolated parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, West Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.
