Who is Draupadi Murmu, BJP’s Presidential candidate?
Draupadi Murmu, a female tribal leader, is the BJP government’s choice for the presidential race. The decision was made at the BJP parliamentary board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the press conference, BJP President JP Nadda said that after extensive discussions with NDA allies, it was felt that the presidential candidate should come from the eastern part of India and should be a tribal candidate
Born on June 20, 1958, Murmu served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.
Hailing from the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha and coming from a tribal community, Murmu started out as a teacher and later entered Odisha politics. He became an MLA twice on Rairangpur’s BJP ticket in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009).
During the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) coalition government in Odisha, she was Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transport from 6 March 2000 to 6 August 2002 and Development of Fisheries and Animal Resources from 6 August 2002 to Jan 16, 2004.
In 2013, he rose to the ranks of National Executive Member of the party’s ST Morcha. An arts graduate from Rama Devi-Bhubaneswar Women’s College, she spent nearly two decades in politics and social service.
She started her political career by winning as a councillor and becoming Vice President of Rairangpur, Odisha in 1997. The same year, she was elected State Vice President of ST Morcha of the BJP.
Draupadi Murmu has managed various ministries in Odisha such as Transport and Commerce. She has also served in various departments such as fishing, animal husbandry, etc.
