Who is inspector Anup Kumar Maurya raped mother of rape survivor?

A police officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj was charged on Monday, August 29, with allegedly raping the mother of a rape victim, who had been following the case of her 17-year-old daughter with the officer.

The incident occurred on Sunday, according to the FIR, recorded on Monday. The 45-year-old woman said in her complaint that she had gone to police housing in connection with gang rape and criminal intimidation case brought up in her daughter’s complaint. The family allegedly claimed that her daughter was “lured” by two relatives to elope with them.

The accused inspector, Anup Kumar Maurya, who was arrested on Monday, was in charge of the Haji Sharif police station and was investigating the case of the woman’s daughter, police sources said.

He was booked for rape under section 376 (2) (a) (ii) (commission of rape by a police officer) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the woman’s complaint, Maurya was handling her daughter’s rape case and he had asked her to meet him at a gas station near her official residential neighbourhood on August 28. From there, he asked her to follow him to her lodging and raped her.

The arrested officer, however, said that he called the complainant to her room to take her signatures on some documents.

“Prima facie, the victim’s charges have been declared true. The inspector has been suspended and arrested for rape. He was brought before the court and sent to jail,” said Kunwar Anupam Singh, SP, Kannauj.

Circle (Sadar) officer Shiv Pratap Singh was asked to conduct a preliminary investigation into the incident and found Maurya guilty as charged.

The outpost in charge was arrested and after being registered in the relevant sections of the IPC, sent to jail by order of the SP. The woman stated in her complaint that Maurya, under the pretext of filing an FR (final report) in her youngest daughter’s runaway case, had asked her to meet him at the police line. After the woman got there, Maurya, who arrived in civilian clothes, asked her to sit on her bike. Later, he took her to her official residence at the police checkpoint, where he allegedly raped her.

After the medical examination, the police sent the accused to jail on Monday. ‘The woman’s medical examination has confirmed rape. After registering an FIR on Sunday night, the advance officer in charge was arrested and sent to jail on Monday. The accused inspector was also suspended with immediate effect,’ SP said. The outpost in charge whom the woman has accused has recently been promoted to the rank of inspector.
