Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga is just 19 years old. He has won the gold medal in the 67 kg men’s weightlifting category at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 by lifting 140 kg of weight. Lalrinnunga created a game record with a lift of 140kg in snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk. This was his first Commonwealth game. Lalrinnunga, who hails from Aizawl, Mizoram, has faced many problems before this big win.

Even after winning the gold medal, Jeremy Lalrinnunga was not satisfied with his performance. He said that he had suffered a leg injury. But he is happy that he has won gold for India. He considers Meera Bai Chanu as his idol.

Life of Jeremy Lalrinnunga

Jeremy Lalrinnunga was born on 26 October 2002 in Aizawl, Mizoram. His father is Lalneihtluanga Ralte, a well-known boxer from the Mizoram boxing circuit. Despite being a sports family backround, it was not easy for Jeremy Lalrinnunga to choose sports as a career. The family was not happy with his decision. The main reason for this was the poor financial condition of the family.

To help his family financially, he worked as a labor on contract in the local PWD department.

Like his father, Jeremy Lalrinnunga tried his hand at boxing before weightlifting. He became the first Indian to do so by winning gold in the 62 kg category at the Youth Olympics in 2018.

Jeremy became part of the Army Co Boys Sports Company where he competed in several international competitions.

Achievements of Jeremy

Jeremy won Silver in Youth World Championship in 2016, Silver in Asian Youth Championship, Silver in Youth World Championship in 2017, Gold in Commonwealth Junior Championship, Gold in Commonwealth Youth Championship, Bronze in Asian Junior Championship in 2018, Silver in Asian Youth Championship, Won Gold in Youth Olympic Games, Gold in Asian Youth Championships in 2019, Gold in 2021 Commonwealth Senior Championships. After this, history has been created by winning gold in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Jeremy credits his success to the Indian government and sports system. He says that behind him his coach, SAI, the physicians have worked hard and supported him a lot.
