Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is Sven Lehmann; The German government has started the new year by creating a special post. This new position will have the responsibility to create a conducive environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer, and other people in society. Taking over as the first head of the National Action Plan for Sexual and Gender Diversity, Green Party leader Sven Lemon said that ‘everyone should be able to live freely, with the right to safety and equality.’

For this, a new post of commissioner has been created for the Federal Government of Germany. The commissioner will work with other ministries of the government on all policies affecting the LGBTQ community.

In addition to the Green Party in the new government of Germany, there is a coalition government of the Social Democratic Party and the pro-business FDP. In the coalition’s joint agreement, the three parties agreed to ‘make Germany a leader in the fight against discrimination’.

Lehmann said after his appointment that he would work to ‘fully enforce the fundamental rights of trans, inter or non-binary people’ in accordance with the German Constitution (Basic Law). Apart from this, he also talked about making a strategy to remove queerphobia from the minds of people.

The 42-year-old leader has been a member of the German parliament Bundestag on behalf of the Green Party since 2017. From 2018 to 2021, he was the spokesman for a parliamentary group within the Green Party, whose work focused on queer and social policies. He has experience working with several governments and non-government groups working for the rights of these groups. He was directly elected to the parliamentary seat of the city of Cologne in the 2021 federal election. Germany’s largest gay community lives in this city in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Activists associated with their issues have welcomed this step taken in Germany. In 2018, Germany became one of the few countries in the world where the third gender got official recognition. There is talk of even bigger changes in the agenda of the new government going forward. For example, in Germany, gay people are still prohibited from donating blood and there are some legal hurdles in trans people choosing their own gender.
