Two underage girls were raped every day last year in the national capital, which was the most unsafe metropolitan city for women in the entire country, according to the latest NCRB report.

According to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), while a total of 28,644 cases of rape of women over the age of 18 were recorded in 2021, there were a total of 36,069 incidents of rape of minors.

A large portion of these 36,069 incidents was recorded under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO), while the rest were recorded under sections of the Indian Penal Code or the Indian Penal Code.

Delhi also recorded 13,892 cases of crimes against women in 2021, a significant increase of more than 40% compared to 2020, when the figure was 9,782, the data showed. Also read Cybercrime against children increase by 400 percent in 2020

Cases of crimes against women in Delhi accounted for 32.20 per cent of the total crimes in the category among 19 metropolitan cities, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Delhi was followed by the financial capital Mumbai, which saw 5,543 such cases, and Bangalore with 3,127 cases.

Mumbai and Bangalore accounted for 12.76% and 7.2% of total crimes in 19 cities, respectively.

The national capital has also reported the highest number of cases of crimes against women in the categories related to kidnapping (3,948), cruelty by husbands (4,674) and rape of girls (833) compared to other metropolitan cities with more of two million inhabitants in 2021.

On average, more than two girls were raped every day in Delhi in 2021, the data showed.

The national capital registered 13,982 cases of crimes against women in 2021, while the total number of crimes in the 19 metropolitan cities was 43,414, according to the report. Alos read 78% increase in environmental crimes in 2020: NCRB report  

The capital registered 136 cases of death by dowry in 2021, which represents 36.26% of the total deaths from the threat in 19 metropolitan cities. The city also reported 3,948 cases of kidnapping and kidnapping of women, out of a total of 8,664 cases in all metropolitan cities.

Delhi also reported 2,022 cases of assault on women with the intention of outraging their modesty last year. There were 1,357 cases reported under the Protection of Children from Sex Offenses Act (girl victims only) in 2021, the NCRB said. As many as 833 cases of rape of girls, the highest among metropolitan cities, were reported in 2021, according to the data.
