Deadly memorial day weekend in US, 16 dead in series of mass shootings
Over Memorial Day weekend, a series of shootings took place across the United States, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens of others. These incidents occurred at various locations, including beaches, high schools, and motorcycle rallies, in eight states. The victims ranged from teenagers to people in their 60s.
The weekend concluded with another episode of violence when nine people were injured in a shooting on Hollywood Beach in Florida. According to police, an altercation between two groups led to gunfire. All nine victims were taken to the hospital and their conditions are currently unknown. Authorities have detained a person of interest and are actively searching for a suspect.
One of the initial incidents occurred Friday in Chicago's North Avenue Beach, where a confrontation between two groups led to gunfire but no injuries. However, over the course of the weekend, Chicago witnessed more than eight deaths and at least 32 injuries due to shootings, according to NBC Chicago.
While reports of shootings have surfaced in various parts of the country, the total number does not appear to be extraordinary for a holiday weekend. On average, the United States experiences about 57 gun-related homicides per day, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Center.
In Baltimore, an argument between two men on Friday resulted in gunfire, wounding five people. Fortunately, the victims' injuries were not life-threatening. Authorities are currently searching for the gunman.
